†EBOLA SYNDROME† †SLEAZY AND AMAZING† †HONG KONG HORROR FILM CLASSIC† †TRAILER † †FULL FILM†

If you are an Exploitation Film aficionado,
you have hopefully dived into
the wonderfully shocking
Category III flicks from Hong Kong.

In 1988, Hong Kong instituted a film rating system.

Most likely due to WWII shock classic 'MEN BEHIND THE SUN'
Category III films are similar to NC-17 films in the U.S.
One difference however, is that Category III ratings are legally binding,
and large fines can be assessed to underage patrons who attempt to see these films in Hong Kong.
For a an in depth history of Category III films,
please read this excellent article,
courtesy of sfilm website BEYOND HOLLYWOOD.

One of my all time favorite Category III films is
Herman Lau's 'Yi boh lai beng duk'
or 'EBOLA SYNDROME' (1996).

I snagged my copy of

'EBOLA SYNDROME'
from Amazon for 10 bones.
I suggest you do the same.
With the impending hype and hysteria,
the price of this DVD is going to skyrocket.

I found this film to be incredibly entertaining and highly amusing.
Once again, director Herman Yau and Cat III Master, actor extraordinaire and punk rock musician Anthony Wong have teamed up for an exploitative winner. The first film I was assaulted with from this dynamic duo was the award winning and very dark 'THE UNTOLD STORY'.
That film was based on a true story and much more serious in tone.
This little gem was more exploitative and over-the-top.
The plot and pacing of this film is excellent.
Things start out with a bang (literally).
Anthony Wong is caught having sex with his bosses wife.
He then quickly and violently dispenses with boss and the wife.
Fearing he may be in trouble, Kai needs to disappear quickly,
so he heads to South Africa where he obtains work in a filthy restaurant.
One of his responsibilities,
is helping the owner obtain meat for the restaurant.
Due to current economic conditions, the price of meat becomes too much, so Kai and boss do what any rational person would do- they head into the bush to acquire some 'bush-meat'.

Being the romantic Soul that he is, Kai can't help himself from raping a sick, defenseless bush woman on the way back to the city.  Fortunately for us, this woman happens to have the dreaded Ebola Virus!

Luckily for us, Mr. Wong is a rare one-in-a-million case of individual who will carry the Ebola Virus without succumbing to it's terribly deadly side-effects. The rest of the film is a joy to watch as Mr. Wong careless spreads the disease to the terrified populations of South Africa and Hong Kong in various gruesome and entertaining ways.

Anthony Wong is pitch perfect as the perverted psychopath and Herman Yau once again provides the deft direction needed to keep thing moving, and make such horrific subject matter entertaining.

I don't want to give away too much of the plot (like it matters), but as a fan of sleaze, exploitation  and gratuitous entertainment I can wholeheartedly recommend this sweet little film. If you are a fan of tasty Category III filth directly from Hong Kong, the 'Ebola Syndrome' does not disappoint!

Check out the snappy trailer.
